Botox
Botox is a brand of purified botulinum delivered via injections into specific muscle regions. As a muscular inhibitor, botulinum causes muscles to relax, making it useful in reducing wrinkles as well as alleviating pain from TMJ disorder. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Besides Botox, other brands of botulinum include Xeomin and Dysport.
Facial Aesthetics
As a facial aesthetics treatment, Botox works by preventing contraction of the muscles that cause wrinkles. When injected strategically, Botox can visibly reduce the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines.
Treatment Process
Before scheduling treatment, we’ll review your medical and medication history. Botox treatment consists of small injections into the indicated facial areas. We’ll first clean the area and then perform any needed numbing or marking to prepare for the injections. The whole process takes 10-30 minutes.
Results
You should begin seeing results 3 days after treatment, with full results evident by 2 weeks. Effects of treatment typically last 3-4 months. And after having repeated treatments, you may find that your results last longer and you can extend the time between subsequent treatments.
Aftercare
After your treatment, you may experience headaches as well as skin redness, swelling, or bruising. These typically resolve within a few days, and an ice pack can be helpful to reduce swelling. For the most part, you’ll be able to resume your regular activity right away. To minimize the occurrence of side effects, it’s best to adhere to the following guidelines after treatment.
What to Avoid: First 4 hours
- lying down
- spending time in the sun
What to Avoid: First 24 hours
- sleeping on your face
- rubbing/massaging your face
- wearing makeup
- exercising
- consuming alcohol
- taking an NSAID (like aspirin or ibuprofen)
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers, another type of facial rejuvenation treatment, work by boosting the volume of select areas of your face. They can be used to fill in creases, wrinkles, and scars or to volumize your lips.
Treatment Process
We’ll review your medical and medication history before moving forward with treatment. Treatment with dermal fillers consists of injections into select areas of your face. Before injecting dermal fillers, we’ll first clean the area. We may numb the area and mark the injection sites as well. Depending on the extent of your treatment, this complete process, including preparation and injections, may take as little as 15 minutes.
Results
Results from your treatment will be noticeable immediately, and you can expect them to last from 6 months to 2 years.
Aftercare
After treatment, you may notice facial redness, swelling, or bruising. These symptoms generally clear up within a few days. An ice pack can be used to help reduce swelling. To help minimize side effects, it’s best to avoid exercising, consuming alcohol, and taking NSAIDs (like aspirin or ibuprofen) for at least 24 hours.
Treatment for TMJ Disorder
Botox can also be part of a treatment plan for TMJ disorder. By relaxing the jaw muscles, Botox prevents them from moving in a way that causes strain. This may help to reduce pain and movement restriction in the jaw.
