- Ear pain
- Jaw locking
- Pain or tenderness in the area of the jaw joint

TMD Treatments We Provide
Because of the complexity of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), there is no one-size-fits-all approach to TMD treatment. To get started, Dr. Peck will perform a comprehensive exam and thoroughly review your medical history. He’ll also seek to identify the presence of any habitual behaviors, such as teeth grinding or lip biting, that can adversely affect jaw muscle or joint function. From the insight these provide, Dr. Peck can deduce the cause of your TMJ disorder and recommend the appropriate treatment.
If your TMD is muscle-related, it may be rooted in habits that have strained your chewing muscles. Treatment recommendations in these cases typically include one or more of the following:
- Physical therapy for your jaw muscles
- Botox
- Posture or habit modifications
- Bite splint
A bite splint is typically prescribed for overnight wear. It can be used to prevent nighttime teeth grinding as well as to promote proper jaw alignment and muscle relaxation.
If your teeth have undergone trauma, uneven wear, or extensive dental work, your TMD may be the result of an uneven bite. In these cases, treatment recommendations involve making strategic adjustments to your teeth in order to restore proper bite function. This looks different for each individual, as it depends on the degree of bite misalignment. Some patients experience bite restoration through the grinding of select teeth. In more severe cases, we may recommend crowning all of the teeth in a process known as full-mouth reconstruction. To learn more, visit our Full-Mouth Reconstruction page.
