Contouring Teeth
My teeth are being straightened by braces. That is going well. But, my teeth edges are jagged and the way some of my teeth are shaped, there looks like gaps, but the teeth are actually together, just some of the sides seem to be angled in a way that makes it look like there are spaces. Is there a way to improve this?
Kelly
Dear Kelly,

Both of these issues can be solved. The jagged edges on teeth is a fairly common thing with braces. Repairing it is called enameloplasty, which is basically just reshaping the teeth a bit. In minor cases, where not much change is needed, your orthodontist should do it as a matter of procedure in finishing off your case.
However, if there needs to be major changes, other things that need to be addressed, or both (as in your case), then you would want an experienced cosmetic dentist.
In the image above, it was necessary to do both a bit of contouring to smooth out edges, but also to add and shape some tooth structure. The added structure will be done with dental bonding. This is an advanced cosmetic dental procedure which has to be done free hand. You want to make sure the dentist knows what they’re doing.
I would look for a dentist with credentials from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Credentials are different than membership. Any dentist can be a member. Credentials have to be earned with exams which verifies the dentist’s technical knowledge and demonstrating cases to a board of examiners which shows they have the skills and artistry to create beautiful results. I would look for someone who is accredited or an accredited fellow (FAACD). Then you will be sure to get the best results possible.
I hope this helps.
