Gum Irritation for Porcelain Veneers

I had six porcelain veneers placed in Columbia. I know the warnings about dental tourism, but this was a NY dentist who moved to Columbia, so I felt fairly comfortable. Now that I’m back, there is some irritation of the gums where the veneers are. I called the dentist and he said that is normal and it should clear up soon. It’s been quite a few weeks. The problem is that I have a wide smile so I want to get four more veneers. Is there anything that I can do in order to fix this irritation? There is a local dentist here who accepts my insurance so I should be able to get the other four done from him, but I want the irritation cleared up first.

Laurie

Dear Laurie,

Inflamed gums after porcelain veneers

I know you said that the dentist you went to in Columbia was a New York dentist, but what does that mean? Not all dentists in New York are skilled cosmetic dentists. Above is an image of a case of porcelain veneers which resulted in gum irritation. This case, if presented to the accreditation board of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, would not pass. Plus, as you said, you have a wide smile. He should have recognized that and recommended ten veneers to begin with.

If the irritation started with the porcelain veneers, they are the cause of it. The so-called New York dentist lied to you. The irritation will not go away. It means that the veneers were not properly placed and will have to be redone. If you leave them, then you will develop gum disease. If that is left untreated, you will lose your teeth.

While I am sure you are willing to replace the veneers you have, I’m afraid you could be headed to equal or even bigger problems with this second dentist. You picked him because he is on your insurance. That tells you nothing about his training. If you want a beautiful smile makeover which is done properly, you need a dentist with the technical knowledge to protect you from damaged gums, such as you have now, as well as the artistry to make them beautiful.

I would have a dentist who is accredited with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) replace your current veneers and give you the four extra ones. AACD accredited dentists are the top cosmetic dentists in the country. Even better would be a fellow (FAACD), but either one will do a fine job for you.
